The Mind-Brain Problem
نویسنده
چکیده
The problem of explaining the mind persists essentially unchanged today since the time of Plato and Aristotle. For the ancients, of course, it was not a question of the relation of mind to brain, though the question was fundamentally the same nonetheless. For Plato, the mind was conceived as distinct from the body and was posited in order to explain knowledge which transcends that available to the senses. For his successor, Aristotle, the mind was conceived as intimately related to the body as form is related to substance. On this conception, the mind is an abstract property or condition of the body itself “enmattered formulable essence”, being always embodied in some material substance. In these two accounts of the mind-body relation we see views which represent the range of conceptions ever since.

متن کاملOn the Relation between the Mind and the Brain: A Neuroscience Perspective
In this paper I show that computational neuroscience provides an important new approach to traditional problems in philosophy such as the relation between mental states and brain states (the mind-body or mind-brain problem), to determinism and free will, and helps one with the ‘hard’ problem, the phenomenal aspects of consciousness.

متن کاملBiological nonlocality and the mind-brain interaction problem: comments on a new empirical approach.
Up to now, we have been faced with an age old fundamental dilemma posed by the mind-brain interaction problem, i.e. how is it that the mind which is subjective and immaterial, can interact with the brain which is objective and material? Analysis of recent experiments appears to indicate that quantum mechanics may have a role to play in the resolution of the mind-brain interaction problem in the...
متن کاملEmpirical Challenges to Conventional Mind-Brain Theory
Synopsis: Despite many significant accomplishments, mainstream scientific psychology has not provided a satisfactory theory of mind, or solved the mind-body problem, and physicalist accounts of the mind are approaching their limits without fully accounting for its properties. The computational theory of mind has collapsed, forcing physicalism to retreat into what necessarily constitutes its fin...
